On Tuesday, January 25, 2005, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released the record of decision (ROD) for oil and gas drilling in Sierra and Otero counties including Otero Mesa,allowing for drilling to occur on 95% of the planning area, contrary to what the BLM had implied.
The City of Albuquerque could soon acquire 327 acres of land adjoining the Sandia Mountain Wilderness in order to protect the area from future development. Once acquired, the city-owned property would be managed in a manner consistent with the federal Wilderness Act.
