January 13, 2006

A bi-weekly update on the happenings in the Wilderness movement brought to you by the Wilderness Society's Wilderness Support Center.

In This Issue

  • Cedar Mountain Wilderness Bill Signed Into Law

  • On January 6, 2006, President Bush signed into law a bill that included designation of the 100,000-acre Cedar Mountain Wilderness Area in Utah (P.L. 109-163). The wilderness designation is part of the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) Protection Act, which was attached to the final version of the large Defense Authorization Act approved by Congress in December 2005. This legislation not only preserves this special wild area with exceptional recreational and natural features, but also allows the Air Force continued use of the Utah Test and Training Range, which includes air space above the wilderness area.

  • West Virginia Forest Plan Generates Record Number of Comments and Lays Groundwork for Wilderness Legislation

  • Conservationists are confident that a record number of people throughout West Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region have commented in favor of protecting more wilderness on the Monongahela National Forest.

  • Wilderness Support Center Releases "Stand By Your Land: An Activist's Guide To Helping People Protect America's Wild Places"

  • This new guide provides an outline of grassroots campaign organizing, an informative section on the legislative process with helpful tips on contacting members of Congress, advice on working with the media, and a unique collection of inspirational quotes.
