Assault on America's Wild Western Lands

Unparalleled Threats
Across the West, lands controlled by the Bureau of Land Management, along with their ecological, historical, and recreational values —are under assault on many fronts. These lands face unparalleled threats from oil and gas exploration, unchecked off-road vehicle use, a far-reaching assault on the National Wilderness Preservation System, and “RS 2477,” an arcane loophole being used by states and counties to claim roads on public and private lands.

These interrelated pressures are intensified by the current BLM land-use planning process: As many as 90 planning exercises are underway or scheduled as this Administration attempts to put unprotected wild BLM lands on a fast track to development. Tens of millions of acres of Western BLM lands, including some of our most significant regional treasures, are in imminent jeopardy of permanently losing their wild natural values.

Energy Development
Almost from day one of this administration, there has been a systematic drive to open much of our public land to oil and gas exploration. Learn more about the widespread drilling already underway and the proposed expansion of these potentially damaging activities.

RS 2477
Across the West, the illegitimate phantom-road claims meant to undermine federal protected areas, thwart wilderness protection, and serve special interests, such as mining, timber, and oil and gas industries, and off-road-vehicle users threaten our wild places.

Off-Road Vehicles
Dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles and other off-road vehicles are putting growing pressure on your public lands—with sometimes devastating results.
