From the Jefferson National Forest's High Knob on a clear day, you can look into five states of the Southern Appalachians. That view is the major magnet that draws upwards of 40,000 visitors to the place every year.
It sounds like the last place anyone would propose a damaging timber sale. But the Forest Service has. It plans to log 700 acres from this remarkable place in what it calls the "Bark Camp" timber sale. In all, the agency would allow logging at 28 spots near the area's lakes and along the popular Chief Benge Scout Trail, one of the forest's most popular recreational areas.
This is an ill-conceived timber sale and it should never be allowed to happen. The Wilderness Society, with partners Virginia Forest Watch and the Clinch Coalition, has filed suit to stop the sale.
