Seizing New Opportunities
A Message from Brenda Davis, Governing Council Chairman, and William H. Meadows, President
There have been many exciting days during the years that the two of us have been in the conservation movement, but March 25, 2009, belongs right near the top of the list. We saw the culmination of tireless efforts by thousands of Americans to protect our natural heritage when Congress passed what many consider the single most important public lands bill in almost three decades. The bottom line was permanent protection for two million acres of wilderness in nine states.

The March victory reflected many years of grassroots outreach and coalition building. New allies and diverse partners, including hunters, anglers, ranchers, climbers, and all those who love these lands, joined us to build bipartisan support for protecting these precious landscapes.

Sam Goldman
Sam has been with The Wilderness Society since Fall 2007. He came most recently from M+R Strategic Services in Washington, DC where he worked with national environmental groups to improve their online campaign work and field organizing capacity. Before that, Sam was the Assistant National Field Director for U.S. PIRG where he covered a variety of issues including the fight to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
