John has been involved in conservation in Idaho for more than 30 years, including long field seasons in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness as a trail crew foreman, 12 years as the conservation director for the Idaho Conservation League, and time working on ranches in the Snake and Salmon River canyons.

John graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in journalism and forestry, and then worked as a reporter for the Lewiston Morning Tribune for 10 years. He spends at least a month out of every year backpacking and camping, along with another month of field work reviewing fire, restoration and forest projects. He is also enjoys photography, backcountry skiing, and cooking with vegetables homegrown in his backyard.
