Matt Dietz has been with The Wilderness Society since spring of 2006 as Ecologist for the California/Nevada office.

He earned his Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Environment from the University of Michigan, focusing his studies on the effects of human disturbance – in particular, road traffic – on the distribution, stress physiology, and reproductive success of migratory landbirds.

Matt has collected scientific data for a number of organizations, including the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, the Hastings Natural History Reservation, and Hawkwatch International.

Prior to his field work in ornithology, Matt worked at the League of Conservation Voters and the Sierra Club and was the director of The Western North Carolina Alliance, a regional grassroots conservation organization.

Matt is now working to bring scientific information to bear on issues relating to roads, transportation, and motorized recreation in California’s National Forests.

When he's not dealing with ORV problems, Matt might be rowing, sailing, birding (life list now over 600 species), flyfishing, hunting, backcountry camping, or reading 19th-Century European novels.
