Ernest served as associate director of the Houston Museum of Natural History and taught ornithology, ecology and field natural history in the Department of Biology at Sweet Briar College. An author of numerous field guides and screen tour lecturer on Mexico for the National Audubon Society, he led numerous expeditions to Mexico.
