The Colorado Plateau includes exceptionally rugged lands in parts of southwest Utah, northern Arizona, northwest New Mexico and western Colorado. This land has been under increased threat from oil and gas development, off-road vehicle use and other development.
In 2009, Congress passed a bill that gave us several new Wilderness Areas in the Colorado Plateau, including:
- Sabinoso Wilderness. This new wilderness area in New Mexico covers more than 16,000 acres.
- Washington County, Utah. Permanent protections are now in place in areas that surround Zion National Park.
This success would not have been possible without Wilderness Society supporters who helped us pass the Public Lands Omnibus bill. With your support, we can continue to push for protection for more special areas like these.
