Anwar Hussain is an Economist in The Wilderness Society’s Alaska regional office, and serves as an Affiliate Associate Professor at the School of Forestry & Wildlife Sciences, Auburn University. He earned a Master’s in Economics from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan, and a Master’s in Agricultural and Applied Economics as well as a Ph.D. in Forestry and Agricultural Economics from the University of Minnesota. His research interests include project appraisal, natural resource economics, regional economic analysis, applied econometrics and general equilibrium modeling. His current research involves the valuation of ecosystem services associated with the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska.

Prior to joining The Wilderness Society, Anwar worked as research economist at the Minnesota Department of Commerce; the Forest Policy Center (Auburn University); the Forest & Wildlife Research Center (Mississippi State University); the Institute of Development Studies (Agricultural University); and the Center for Applied Economic Studies (Peshawar University). During his service at the Auburn and Mississippi State Universities, he co-authored numerous papers that researched the southeast U.S. hunting lease market, wildlife-associated recreation economic impacts, capitalization of hunting lease income into forest land values, U.S. environmental legislation, administrative appeals of USDA Forest Service fuels reduction actions, public attitudes towards financing urban forestry programs, and economic implications of ecological problems (e.g., deer vehicle-collisions, invasive tree species).

His research in Pakistan was focused on economic appraisal and evaluation of agricultural, natural resource, and rural development projects, and he contributed to the design, economic appraisal and impact assessment of a dozen development projects. These projects were sponsored by international organizations including Afghanaid; Asianics Agro Development International; the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme; the International Fund for Agricultural Development; the United Nations’ World Food Program; the Institute of Developing Economies (Tokyo, Japan); and the Swiss Agency for International Development.
