Senior Landscape Ecologist

John Gallo joined The Wilderness Society in 2010 and works as a Senior Landscape Ecologist in the California region. He has a BS in Ecology and Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Returning to school to attain a PhD in Geography, he created a conservation plan for the Conception Coast Project. He worked on similar research for his post-doctoral studies in South Africa.

His decade of research includes developing a spatial decision support system (SDSS) that helps prioritize the specific sites of a region or country that should be conserved, and the conservation approach that is best for that site.

John is currently customizing the SDSS to assist restoration planning for northern California forests. He is also participating in a wiki-science collaborative effort which includes five other customizations of the SDSS framework.
