Time to speak up on rules governing how our forests are managed

The Obama administration and the Forest Service last week hosted what they call a national roundtable. It was an effort to summarize and explain in detail the various components of the draft forest planning rule, which was published last month. When final, this rule will guide the Forest Service on how to manage 193 million acres of America’s national forests. Bird songs hit right note for forest protection

"Quick, three beers!"  Although a cold one may be in order at the end of a long day in the field, this is not the call to head to the pub, but the call of an Olive-sided Flycatcher — at least it’s the mnemonic device that we ornithologists use to help remember its song. While I find it the most enticing of the mnemonics, it is certainly not the strangest. Feb. 16 was one of the proudest days in my 25 years working for The Wilderness  Society. That was the day we completed and sent to the U.S. Forest Service a 95-page comment letter that represents our best thinking about how our country’s 193 million-acre National Forest System should be managed to meet the challenges and demands of the 21st Century. Obama’s next big opportunity: Court decision gives president chance to shape future of forests

Thanks to a court victory last month that tossed out misguided ideas for how the U.S. should manage its forests, President Obama now has a golden opportunity to replace them with his administration’s principles. The result could be a mandate for the Forest Service to make decisions about managing forests based on the 21st century imperatives of global warming and clean drinking water. Read more
