On Saturday, Sept. 25, Americans from all walks of life will gather on public lands across the country to celebrate National Public Lands Day. Our public lands — national parks, national forests, national wildlife refuges, and the lands overseen by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management — belong to all Americans as our natural heritage.Read more

The Wilderness Act: What Americans have gained since 1964

As I pack my bags for a rafting trip through Idaho’s wilderness, I am reminded of the benefits that all of us enjoy thanks to the Wilderness Act, which celebrates another birthday this month. Sept. 3 marks the 46th anniversary of the day President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Wilderness Act into law in 1964. The act created the National Wilderness Preservation System and immediately protected 9.1 million acres of special public lands by making them part of this system. Read more
