I’ll let you in on a secret. There is a way for your family to experience the best of southern Utah and northern Arizona and all you have to do is get there. Yup, no need to develop a plan for how to spend your days, others have done that planning for you! Every year, the Amazing Earthfest takes place the third week in May and offers a sample of the rich cultural and natural world surrounding the area of Kanab, Utah. May 13 is the kickoff date for the 6th annual festival.
Last year, I participated in a group hike within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument that took us through the stunning Paria Canyon and to an incredible sea of color on a picture-perfect day. Contrast the oranges, yellows and whites of the Navajo sandstone with the deep red of Indian paintbrush in bloom, the unending blue in the sky and the greenish-grayish-brownish in the desert grasses and forbes all around. Afterward, I enjoyed a mouthwatering meal at the Rocking V Café and then walked into the Crescent Moon Theater in town to see a lineup of skilled local musicians picking banjos and guitars and singing sweet harmonies.
That is just a few of the many types of experiences that Earthfest has to offer. Events include nature hikes, art exhibits, bike rides, pioneer demonstrations, musical acts, documentary films and much more. What’s amazing is that most of the events offered throughout the week are free!
If you’re like me and enjoy the wilderness but also like to get a taste of the local culture that surrounds wild areas, the Amazing Earthfest is for you. Consider coming through Kanab May 13-20 and learn more about your public lands in one of the most amazing places on earth. You will not be disappointed.
The Amazing Earthfest website will help guide you through many of the activitiues planned.
