These days the phrase ‘energy independence’ has become code for drilling  our wild public lands. But what some may not realize is that oil and gas from our wildlands is not staying in the United States. As it turns out, the oil, gas, and coal that is drilled and mined from right here in the U.S. is actually leaving American shores to fuel cars and furnaces in places like Europe, China, and India. Climate trio Kerry-Graham-Lieberman have recently held a series of meetings with various interest groups — including those representing industry, such as the American Petroleum Institute (API). Several reports about the KGL-API et al meeting initially conveyed that API was conditionally supporting the initial framework presented by the senators, which included a tri-part approach to pricing carbon as well as some ideas for how to invest revenues generated through pollution permits and a carbon fuel fee. More forged letters to Congress found: Coal industry tactics deplorable

Will dirty Coal stop at nothing? The scandal over coal industry lobbyist stealing identities — to protect their profits has deepened. Yesterday Washington’s Roll Call newspaper reported that: “Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has uncovered five more forged letters as part of his investigation into fraudulent correspondence sent by Bonner & Associates on behalf of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity opposing the House climate change bill.” Read more

Canada’s strip-mining isn’t so friendly for Montana’s Glacier National Park

What would it say about our prospects for global peace and prosperity if the world’s first International Peace Park were strip-mined and drilled in search of coal and gas? I wish that question was merely hypothetical, but with Canadian strip-mining and gas drilling threatening the water and wildlife of Montana’s Glacier National Park, the U.S. portion of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the question is all too real.
