Grand Canyon National Park is undoubtedly one of America's most beloved national parks, attracting about five million visitors every year who come to hike, camp and raft the river at its depths.

Winter can be a special time to visit. This season, the canyon experienced a rare weather event known as a cloud inversion

Unfortunately, despite its prized treasures, this park faces serious obstacles, including a lack of funding. But Arizonans rely on this place so much economically, that the state spent a half-million dollars to open it for the last five days of the shutdown this fall.

Happily, lovers of the Grand Canyon did celebrate earlier this year when the surrounding lands were further protected from mining.
