Leaked e-mail details Big Oil’s designs to kill clean energy

J.P. Leous

Big Oil and Dirty Coal are making quite a name for themselves as they spend millions on pulling out all the stops to keep America addicted to toxic fuels. By now you’ve probably read about what we’re up against as we pivot from our clean energy and climate victory in the House to what we hope is an even bigger win in the Senate. But the story has spilled across the Atlantic — where the Brits have run a story on more dirty tricks, brought to you by the polluters.

The U.K.’s Guardian newspaper reported on Aug. 14 that a leaked e-mail from the American Petroleum Institute outlined a plan by the oil and gas lobby to stage a series of public events that would give the appearance of a groundswell of American public opinion against climate and energy legislation to be taken up by the Senate this fall.

According to The Guardian:

“A key lobbying group will bankroll and organise 20 ''energy citizen'' rallies in 20 states. In an email obtained by Greenpeace, Jack Gerard, the president of the American Petroleum Institute (API), outlined what he called a "sensitive" plan to stage events during the August congressional recess to put a "human face" on opposition to climate and energy reform.”

The upshot? The leaked e-mail details that the powerful and well-funded oil and gas lobby, as embodied in the American Petroleum Institute (API), are planning a nation-wide astroturfing campaign aimed at killing America’s transition to a clean energy economy.

Make no mistake: Those looking to profit from destroying our planet realize the power public opinion has as the Senate takes up energy and climate legislation. They realize Senators listen to constituents when deciding whether to steer our economy toward clean jobs or keep it tied to a filthy, out-dated past. And they won’t let the public’s support for climate action slow them down. In fact, they have no problem manufacturing a façade of “support” to fool the American public and our representatives in Congress.

Don’t let them get away with it! Call or email your Senators today and tell them you want less carbon pollution and more clean energy now!
