The Wilderness Act: What Americans have gained since 1964

As I pack my bags for a rafting trip through Idaho’s wilderness, I am reminded of the benefits that all of us enjoy thanks to the Wilderness Act, which celebrates another birthday this month. Sept. 3 marks the 46th anniversary of the day President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Wilderness Act into law in 1964. The act created the National Wilderness Preservation System and immediately protected 9.1 million acres of special public lands by making them part of this system. Read more

Remembering Stewart Udall’s Conservation Legacy

One of the great voices of conservation has passed away. Stewart Udall, who  served in Congress and as Secretary of the Interior under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, died last weekend at the age of 90. Read more
