Good news! A handful of places have recently been named as new national monuments, including the stunning Rio Grande del Norte region. Spanning 240,000 acres in northern New Mexico, this area now protects the Rio Grande River, which provides water to downstream communities.
The San Juan Islands, located in Washington state, may not be a tropical paradise, but it is paradise none-the-less with hidden coves, swashbuckling storybook island names (Skull Island and Iceberg Point Rocks) sandy beaches and trails to explore.
Well, just this week the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources passed 19 wilderness and public lands protection measures. These bills are now eligible for passage out of the Senate and ultimately to become the law of the land!
