Solar Plan Still Needs Some Tweaks

January 10, 2012 - In a few short weeks the Department of Interior will close their comment period on an updated plan for solar development on public lands in the six southwestern states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. The newest plan, published in October, proposes a balanced approach to developing clean energy while protecting sensitive resources. This framework will help protect our sensitive wildlands and wildlife while ensuring that we get the sun’s clean energy into homes across the West. more

2011 CAPE Awards: Celebrating milestones in conservation for our public lands

December 16, 2011 - America is home to nearly 250 million acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Those acres fall outside of our National Parks, Forests and Wildlife Refuges. Managing these lands for the multiple uses they have been set aside for can be a challenge. To honor the leadership and commitment to conservation of these lands, The Wilderness Society’s BLM Action Center annually compiles a year-end list of the greatest achievements in BLM land management. The result is our CAPE Awards. more

November 22, 2011 - The Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released a long-awaited report to Congress that details a list of lands that the agencies see as good candidates for being designated as new wilderness areas. The report, released in early November 2011, was compiled based on the input of local community members and officials, as well as conservation groups including The Wilderness Society. more

October 31, 2011 - We have all seen it—the pictures, postcards, or movie scenes that feature the glowing beauty of the Grand Canyon. The steep-sided red canyon walls have mystified some and have piqued the curiosity of many.  It has been and remains beloved by people all over the world. The Grand Canyon continues to face threats though. Potential uranium mining in the area could change the ecosystem for decades to come. more
