STEWARDSHIP
Restoring public lands to their full splendor; Protecting them in the face of unprecedented threats.
About the Stewardship Campaign
Maintaining this country’s magnificent public land system is a monumental task. To ensure land agencies manage it correctly, The Wilderness Society works with federal land managers around the country and policy-makers in Washington, D.C.
With our singular expertise in science, advocacy, and public education, we play a leadership role in hundreds of land-use planning processes from Vermont to California, and forcefully promote stewardship practices that will maintain the health of the land.
Make no mistake. America’s wilderness areas and public lands are facing enormous pressures that threaten their health and capacity for self-renewal. Among them are:
- An explosion of off-road vehicle use that is negatively transforming tranquil landscapes
- Mining, timber cutting and other resource extraction
- Inadequate funding
-
An increase of wildland fires that negatively impact ecosystems and the species they shelter
What The Wilderness Society is Doing
Nationally we push to persuade public officials — from the President to Congress to agency directors — to create policies and legislation that will foster good conservation practices on public lands. We monitor and influence the work of local land managers, often providing the scientific data they need to make the right decisions. We work with an array of local businesses and community groups to help them understand the issues and become proponents of good stewardship. And we conduct potent national and regional communications campaigns to build awareness of the threats and move citizens to action.
