September 23, 2009 - Fall is officially here. Summer’s sticky afternoons are being replaced by crisp autumnal breezes, and fresh cider greets you after an afternoon walk in the woods. What’s not to like? Earlier this month President Obama declared September Wilderness Month, and called for Americans to get outside and enjoy our treasured landscapes. Mt. Hood’s bloated road system poses serious problems

September 16, 2009 - Just twenty miles east of the Portland metro area, cold mountain streams run  through lush forest that carpets the lower reaches of Mt. Hood’s snow capped peak and provides habitat for many species including the spotted owl. With about 5 million annual recreational visits, people flock to Mt. Hood National Forest because it offers accessible backcountry getaways for hiking, camping, picnicking, or just clearing one’s mind. more

Vilsack vision for Forest Service focuses on restoration

September 14, 2009 - Restoration. That’s a very important word to those of us who work in  conservation. Following on decades of logging in our national forests — much of it unsustainable — considerable work is needed to restore the ecosystems our forests contain. That’s why I was especially excited to hear that watershed restoration is at the heart of the Obama Administration’s vision for our national forests, as laid out by Agriculture Secretary Vilsack in August. more

Mining reform long overdue: Grand Canyon “timeout” is a vital intermediate step

September 11, 2009 - Arizona’s Grand Canyon is one of America’s most iconic landscapes. One of America’s crown jewels, the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River that rushes through it have faced many serious threats over the years. Uranium mining is one such threat; it presents grave environmental and health hazards and it imperils the safety of humans and wildlife by potentially contaminating water supplies with toxic tailings. This risk is intolerable in such a spectacular and ecologically significant place. more
