Excerpts:
Schlesinger's talk will serve as a prologue to the Headwaters Gathering being held at the college March 27-29. The three-day long conference hosted by Warren Wilson, Orion Magazine and The Wilderness Society will focus on how climate change is going to affect the mountain region environmentally as well as socially, economically and culturally, said Margo Flood, executive director of the Environmental Leadership Center at Warren Wilson.
…Brent Martin, Southern Appalachian director for The Wilderness Society, said the conference is the first of its kind in the region. He said the gathering will bring together many well-respected global warming experts that, he hopes, will lead to the development of a collective voice for addressing climate change in the Southern Appalachians.
“We don't have a collection of voices for this region that have the profile that I feel we need to address this issue,” he said. “We hope to create a community dialogue about this and community consciousness raising out of all this that will result in some communal effort to mitigate some of these impacts.”
