The Great Smoky Mountains National Park would appear an excellent place for federal officials to learn about the best community-driven strategies for Americans to reconnect with the natural world.
With about 10 million visitors per year, the Smokies will be a focal point as officials from the U.S. departments of Interior and Agriculture conduct fact-finding tours and listening sessions; they were in Nashville last week.
President Barack Obama signed a memorandum establishing America's Great Outdoors Initiative about four months ago, and a final report is due by Nov. 15.
