National Landscape Conservation System Internship
January 14, 2009
The Wilderness Society is a national, nonprofit conservation group whose mission is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care about our wild places. The intern for TWS’ National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) Campaign will assist with a variety of efforts that are meant to conserve, protect and restore the currently 26 million acres of special Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands that have a conservation mandate.
The position being offered is designed for upper level undergrads or graduate students with experience in research and writing preferred. We are looking for an intern with strong research and writing skills to help complete the second assessment of the National Landscape Conservation System, which will be published in early 2011. The first assessment was released in 2006 as a tool to help build support for the fledgling Conservation System.
March 30, 2009 saw President Obama sign into law the National Landscape Conservation System Act, permanently establishing America’s newest conservation system. This second assessment will be a key part of the dialogue about the future of BLMs conservation lands and the National Landscape Conservation System.
