The Wilderness Society seeks a Northern New Hampshire Community Organizer to advance the Society’s Heart of the Northern Forest Landscape Vision, by identifying and mobilizing pro-wilderness voices in northern New Hampshire. Community education and organizing work will focus around National Forest and National Wildlife Refuge initiatives including creation and coordination of activities for a new Friends of Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge and existing Friends of groups in the White Mountain National Forest. The community organizer will work under direction of TWS Northern Forest Program Director and Northern Forest Associate.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and enhance TWS’ activist network for support and engagement in TWS National Forest and National Wildlife Refuge initiatives;
- Develop strong working relationships with opinion leaders in local communities, non-traditional allies such as the hunting, angling and recreation communities;
- Maintain and enhance a New Hampshire-based activist data base
- Coordinate outreach in selected northern New Hampshire communities, including making presentations to public audiences, conducting informal “kitchen table” discussions, and developing one-on-one relationships in order to develop supporters and activists for TWS
- Prepare monthly activity reports
- Prepare for and participate in Friends of meetings and other special events and meetings as needed.
Qualifications
- BA degree or equivalent experience is required.
- Highly motivated self-starter with a proven ability to manage multiple demands and deadlines and work independently
- Proven ability to work constructively with a wide range of interests including rural community leaders, industrial forestry interests, hunters, anglers, tribal leaders, local elected officials, local, state, and federal land managers and conservation organizations
- Ability to travel frequently and perform some evening and weekend work
- At least 1 to 3 years of outreach and organizing experience in the environmental field
- Familiarity with New Hampshire’s Northern Forest region, its people and their values
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access
Compensation
This is a part-time temporary one year position with the possibility of renewal.
