Recreation
Protecting our land’s peace and tranquility; Defending it from off-road damage.
Recreation is one of the greatest benefits our nation’s public lands provide. From hiking and hunting to canoeing and climbing, from exploring back roads to viewing wildlife, recreation is critically important for our health and quality of life, and for forging a deep connection between the natural world and the people that inhabit it.
The flora and fauna, mountains and meadows, caves and canyons beckon us to explore, challenge us to grow and thrive.
The Wilderness Society aims to protect large segments of our public lands for those who like to experience nature free of noise and clamor, clutter and pollution. There are many threats to our front and backcountry getaways, and one of the most damaging is from dirt bikes, rock-crawling jeeps, snowmobiles, and other off-road vehicles. These machines, enabled with ever-changing technologies, are pushing further into the backcountry causing serious, widespread disturbances to land, water, wildlife and other visitors.
The Wilderness Society is working to strike a balanced, sustainable recreation policy on public lands.
We do this knowing that Americans agree that large sections of our public lands should be completely off-limits to noise, air and water pollution caused by off-road vehicles.
