Screening and Q&A: "Forward"

A woman stands overlooking a cliffside in the San Gabriel Mountains

Navigating a myriad of life challenges in her mid-20s, Anjelica Avella turned to the outdoors to support her mental health. But while she enjoyed her connection with nature, the lack of other plus-size women of color outdoors left her feeling unsettled. The short film "Forward" chronicles Anjelica’s efforts to build a community with other historically excluded people—and shows how women, once sidelined, have become a catalyst for change.

On Jan. 10, 2024, The Wilderness Society hosted an exclusive screening of "Forward" alongside a Q&A session with Anjelica and "Forward" director Palmer Morse. The intimate conversation touched on equitable access to the outdoors, body inclusivity and the immeasurable benefits of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument in Greater Los Angeles.
