Wilderness Society mourns the loss of Alice Rivlin, champion of the outdoors

WASHINGTON, May 15, 2019 ---- With the death of Alice Rivlin, The Wilderness Society mourns the loss of a highly respected economist and policy expert who served on The Wilderness Society’s Governing Council from 1981 to 1993, chairing the Council from 1988 to 1992.

Rivlin was the founding director of the Congressional Budget Office, where she served from 1975 to 1983, and she served as director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Bill Clinton and in many other important roles during her long career in public policy.

Statement from Jamie Williams, President of The Wilderness Society

“We have lost a tremendous leader who combined a Washington insider’s expertise on policy matters with a passion for our nation’s great outdoors. She viewed careful stewardship of our economy and our environment with the same tenacity and insight.

The Wilderness Society, founded in 1935, is the leading conservation organization working to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places. With more than one million members and supporters, The Wilderness Society has led the effort to permanently protect 111 million acres of wilderness and to ensure sound management of our shared national lands. www.wilderness.org
