Statement from The Wilderness Society calling for President Obama to take action

Congress adjourned without passing House Natural Resources Committee Chair Rob Bishop’s (R-Utah) Utah Public Lands Initiative Act. Congress’ failure to act creates a greater sense of urgency for President Obama to take action to protect sensitive cultural and historical lands in southeastern Utah, including Bears Ears.

The following statement is from Matt Keller, National Monuments Campaign Director at The Wilderness Society:

“The Public Lands Initiative failed because it included too many poison pill provisions and failed to build on areas of common ground among stakeholders. But the initiative demonstrated the widespread support for permanently protecting the Bears Ears landscape. The threats to these lands are real and urgent, and it is time for President Obama to protect Bears Ears as a National Monument.”
