This morning, the Senate took a critical step in addressing the threat of global warming with the introduction of the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act. It is a strong beginning to meeting the most serious challenge of our time.
America’s economy and our children’s future are increasingly threatened by the effects of burning the fossil fuels that cause global warming. The Wilderness Society thanks Senators Kerry and Boxer for their leadership, and for recognizing that the Senate must build on the momentum of the clean energy jobs bill passed by the House of Representatives in June. It has never been more urgent to take action to move our nation away from a dangerous dependence on fossil fuel and toward an energy policy that is renewable, sustainable, and home-grown.
The effects of global warming already are being felt on our nation’s public lands—the national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and other wild lands that are critical to clean air, clean water, and other benefits on which our human communities depend. The bill introduced today will help ensure that we don’t lose these places we’ve fought for more than a century to protect.
