Statement by Wilderness Society President William H. Meadows On Selection of David J. Hayes as Deputy Secretary of the Interior

Jan 22, 2009

David J. Hayes is a superb choice and will be a first-rate partner for Interior Secretary Salazar. David served with distinction as the deputy to Secretary Babbitt, playing a significant role in stewardship decisions involving California’s redwoods, the Colorado River, and scores of other areas. I have been impressed by David’s ability to bring people together and to get things done, both during his years at Interior and while working in the private sector. He is an extremely bright guy with vision, experience, and a commitment to protect our natural legacy for future generations.

The Obama administration is inheriting an Interior Department that faces a host of challenges, the biggest being an urgent need to restore balance between development and conservation of our publicly-owned natural resources. We look forward to David’s confirmation and to working with him and the Interior Secretary.
