The Wilderness Society’s reaction to Secretary Jewell’s announcement today on reforming the federal coal program

Jan 15, 2016
Jamie Williams, president of The Wilderness Society, issued the following statement in response to Secretary Jewell’s announcement today on reforming the federal coal program:

“Today, Secretary Jewell answered a call to action from communities across the nation by taking the first meaningful steps in a generation to fix a broken federal coal program. Our public lands are essential to the economic vitality of western communities and are tremendously important in our effort to address the causes and consequences of climate change.  We have a responsibility to develop a thoughtful plan for where, how and whether coal should be developed on public lands before we commit more of our resources to development—particularly with decades of reserves already under company control. We strongly support the administration's commitment to reform, and welcome the pledge to be more transparent with the American public about the social, economic, and climate impacts of coal development.”
