The following statement from Peter Dykstra, Pacific Northwest Regional Director at The Wilderness Society was issued in response to the pending national monument designation of Bureau of Land Management lands in Washington state’s San Juan Islands:

“The Wilderness Society congratulates the San Juan Islands community, Senator Cantwell and Congressman Larsen for their tireless work and dedication to protect 1,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management lands in the San Juan Islands.

The San Juan Islands are one of Washington state’s gems, with people coming from all over the world to visit and recreate there. The local economy is dependent on the natural beauty, historic and cultural sites and wildlife habitat that will be protected under the Antiquities Act for generations to come thanks to President Obama and Secretary Salazar.”
