Environmental Leaders' Letter to President Obama - Solving the Gulf Crisis, and Preventing the Next

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

The leaders of the top environmental organizations, including The Wilderness Society President Bill Meadows, sent President Obama a letter detailing several practical suggestions for solving the current crisis in the Gulf of Mexico, and for preventing the next one, either in the Gulf or along another treasured coastline or wildland.

Included in the suggestions are a suspension of the drilling leases on the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas off the coast of Alaska, where drilling is slated to begin in July, 2010. Also included is a recommendation to strongly support renewable energy, which would lessen our dependence on oil and other fossil fuels, and make disastrous spills like the one in the Gulf a thing of the past.
