Letter to the U.S. Senate regarding dangers of exploratory offshore drilling

Monday, May 3, 2010

In the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig accident — which could become the largest ecological disaster in history — a coalition of environmental organizations sent a letter to the U.S. Senate, urging them to pursue clean energy instead of the destructive and dangerous practices of oil and gas drilling. More than 70 groups, including The Wilderness Society, signed the letter, which highlights the dangers of drilling not just in the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but the rough, icy seas of the Arctic Ocean, where exploratory drilling is still being considered for as early as this summer. The groups are also calling for climate legislation that reduces American dependence on these invasive and treacherous energy sources and transitions to a clean energy future.
