Massachusetts Renewable Portfolio Standard and Woody Biomass Eligibility Comments

Monday, July 25, 2011

The Wilderness Society has been interested in the revision of Massachusetts’ Renewable Portfolio Standard regulations concerning biomass energy facilities. These standards will have a significant effect on forests in the Northeast as well as set an important precedent for other regions in the country. On June 2, 2011, The Wilderness Society submitted comments (see below) to the Joint Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy Committee that reviewed the proposed regulations for thirty days in order to provide the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) with comments. We have urged the Massachusetts DOER to support several modifications to the proposed regulations and ensure that biomass energy will support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and strong sustainability and efficiency standards.
