On December 23, 2010, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced a new policy that requires the Bureau of Land Management to inventory its lands for wilderness characteristics and protect those values. The BLM had a similar policy in place for decades until it was dismantled by the Bush administration in 2003. This briefing book explores some of the spectacular western landscapes that have been threatened by irresponsible oil and gas drilling and off-road vehicle abuse without a wilderness policy in place. We expect these places will now be protected thanks to Salazar restoring the BLM’s wilderness policy, along with many other iconic wildlands that are cherished for hiking and hunting opportunities, breathtaking scenery, and ecological values.
