The Wilderness Society works to protect several areas around the Grand Canyon, including the Vermilion Cliffs and Grand Canyon Parashant National Monuments.
The proposed SunZia Southwest transmission project would run from central New Mexico to south-central Arizona. The project should not be built through Arizona’s sensitive San Pedro Valley or the Aravaipa Canyon area.
An application to develop the Sonoran Solar site was approved west of Phoenix, Arizona in December 2011. If constructed, the project will produce 300 megawatts of solar energy.
We’re happy to report the Interior Department has announced a prohibition on mining at the Grand Canyon and the surrounding watersheds for the next 20 years.
The sun shines almost year round on Arizona, and with strong local support for renewable energy and proximity to urban energy markets, it is a great place for solar energy development.
