As one of the newest members of The Wilderness Society’s Governing Council, Dave Matthews is lending his voice to help preserve America’s treasured wilderness—including legislation to protect Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness expansion efforts near his home in Seattle. He is also calling on Congress to avoid short-sighted cuts in programs that preserve land, wildlife, and clean water.

Court denies protection for Idaho’s wild backcountry

BOISE - Conservationists today expressed disappointment in a federal district court decision this weekend upholding a federal rule that eliminates protection for 400,000 acres of Idaho’s wild backcountry and exposes more than 5 million acres in the state to greater threat of development. The ruling by the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho on the 2008 Idaho Roadless Rule allows the State of Idaho to institute its own version of a national policy that had protected some 58.5 million acres across the country when it was adopted in 2001.

Congressman Norm Dicks: A clean water champ for the Skokomish

The Skokomish River watershed in Washington's Olympic National Forest is on the mend. A note of thanks should go to Congressman Norm Dicks for helping to make it so.

Earlier this month, the Washington Watershed Restoration Initiative honored Dicks for championing efforts to restore Washington’s forests and protect clean water sources as part of the Legacy Roads and Trails Remediation Program. I was asked to speak about how increased congressional funding for the program has benefited the Skokomish watershed.
