CRAIG, CO — A long awaited Resource Management Plan (RMP) for a treasured portion of Northwest Colorado was released today. The Bureau of Land Management’s Little Snake Field Office (LSFO) released the final proposal following years of input from local stakeholders, unbiased scientists and economists, and their own internal studies.

Protections made official for Colorado's Vermillion Basin

After a decade long struggle, The Wilderness Society and partners are pleased to announce new protections from oil and gas drilling for Northwest Colorado’s magnificent Vermillion Basin.

A total of 77,000 acres of Vermillion Basin will be protected as part of the area’s new resource management plan, released by the Bureau of Land Management’s Little Snake field office on Aug. 13.

We’re approaching the 4th of July holiday which allows us a moment to stop and celebrate our country’s independence. The Wilderness Society has another reason to celebrate this week as well. Yesterday the Bureau of Land Management’s Little Snake Field Office in Northwest Colorado announced a major victory—Vermillion Basin in Northwest Colorado will be off-limits to oil and gas drilling. This was a long and hard fought process by our Colorado staff and our coalition partners.

The Bureau of Land Management’s Little Snake Field Office announced Tuesday, June 29, that it will close Vermillion Basin to all future oil and gas leasing.
