Utah's Desolation Canyon region is one of the most rugged stretches of the American West, but its wildness is jeopardized by plans for oil and gas drilling.
Just 45 minutes east of downtown Seattle, the Pratt, Middle Fork and South Fork Snoqualmie Valleys are the closest mountain valleys to Puget Sound population centers.
On Jan. 11, 1908, Roosevelt had the foresight to designate the Grand Canyon National Monument. Years later, the unit became Grand Canyon National Park.
