The National Park system and our BLM monuments lands just got a little bigger. Americans will soon be able to enjoy five new national monuments in states from New Mexico to Washington.
Voicing concerns that Americans are losing their connection with nature -- and that natural areas are falling victim to sprawl and pollution -- the Obama administration is inviting hundreds of sportsmen, environmentalists and other champions of the outdoors to Washington next month for a summit on conservation.

…The off-the-record dinner, reported Thursday by Vanity Fair, must have made an impression on the president. A few days later, Brinkley got a call from Interior Secretary Ken Salazar inviting him to drop by. The men spent two hours talking about conservation history, wildlife protection and where Obama should visit if he went to a national park.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has issued what amounts to a one-year moratorium on commercial activity in the most sensitive areas of the national forests. This is a welcome reprieve, but it is only a first step. These areas need the complete and permanent protection that President Bill Clinton had in mind when he signed the so-called roadless rule in 2001.
