Land and Water Conservation Fund FY 2010: Comprehensive List of Projects and Programs

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) uses fees from offshore drilling permits to acquire critical lands within park, refuge, forest, BLM land boundaries. In Fiscal Year 2010, $266 million has been allocated to LWCF for protection of important places such as the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument in Oregon, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan, and the Lewis & Clark National Forest in Montana, among others listed here.

Washington, D.C. — Representatives of national conservation organizations today released the annual “Green Budget” for FY 2010, a document that details the federal agency funding the groups say is needed to sustain clean air and water, lands, oceans and wildlife over the long term — an increasingly urgent priority in an era of global warming.

As we prepare to meet conservation challenges presented in the new Congress, it’s a good time to assess — and celebrate — the progress we made for wildlands protection in 2010.

Times have changed dramatically since the Bush days when we were holding the line against every environmental attack imaginable, but threats from climate change, oil and gas drilling, development, off-road vehicle abuse and other dangers still abound for public lands.

September is National Wilderness Month and to honor the occasion, The Wilderness Society has pulled together an urgent campaign to get Congress to pass protections for nearly 4 million acres of iconic wild places throughout the country. More than 20 different Wilderness and wildlands protection proposals are working their way through Congress — many after years of works to get them there — but we must rally to make sure they make it past the finish line.
