Rocky Mountain National Park Wilderness and Indian Peaks Wilderness Expansion Act - Colorado (S. 1380/H.R. 2334)

Rocky Mountain National Park provides world-class hiking and climbing, and breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains, while also supporting the economies of several gateway communities. This legislation would protect nearly 250,000 acres of Wilderness within the park, finally implementing a recommendation by the National Park Service made in the early 1970s.

When President George W. Bush approved a $700 billion economic bailout package Oct. 3, he also signed into effect a $3.3 billion earmark that will directly help the Snoqualmie Ranger District.

The earmark is a renewal of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, which provides funds for improvements to public schools, road maintenance and stewardship projects.

Funding will be divided among 41 states and Puerto Rico over a four-year period from 2008-2011.

Monumental National Wilderness Bill Passes Congress

WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives today passed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, which would permanently protect more than 2 million acres of America’s wilderness in California, Colorado, Idaho, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia. The omnibus lands act provides the greatest expansion of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 15 years. It now advances to the President’s desk, where it is expected to be signed into law.
