On March 17, 2015, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell addressed a packed house with a bold agenda for energy development on public lands for the next two years. This agenda focuses on locking in critical reforms that help protect wildlands, clean air, and clean water.
First is the nominee for Assistant Secretary for Lands and Minerals in the Department of Interior. President Obama has nominated Janice Schneider, a veteran of the department, to fill the position that has been vacant for more than 2 years.
This bill would set a budget, with limits for individual programs, for how the Department of Energy spends its money starting October 1, 2013. This normally routine business is something that both the House and the Senate do every year.
Yet, here we are, with people and the government unable to stop furloughs, job losses, and lower revenue to keep the government functioning. Our public lands have certainly not been spared from this indiscriminate budget ax.
