Dan Smuts is The Wilderness Society's Senior Regional Director, Pacific region.

Dan has been working to protect America’s public lands for over twenty years and has been directly involved in campaigns that have resulted in the permanent protection of over three million acres of wilderness and national monuments. He started with The Wilderness Society in 2000 after acting as a public lands advocate and Political Action Committee staff with Sierra Club in Washington, D.C., serving as Communications Director for The National BLM Wilderness Campaign in Salt Lake City, and working for the outdoor clothing company Patagonia in D.C., Utah, and Ventura, California.



Dan is also an active volunteer and has been deeply involved with organizations focused on education, public broadcasting and youth mentoring.



Dan has a BA in Economics from Georgetown University and an MBA from University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business. He was also a Center for Social Innovation Fellow at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
