Victories in the Northern Forest

From adding new wilderness protections to expanding a refuge, we’ve already been successful in protecting parts of the Northern Forest.

With your help we can continue to build on these successes.

Victories in the Northern Forest

2006 New England Wilderness Act

In 2006 we helped push through a bill to add more than 34,000 acres of wilderness to the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. This monumental legislation created a new Wilderness area and added to two others.

Umbagog Refuge expansion

We worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to expand the boundaries of the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge in Maine. This expansion takes the refuge from 16,300 acres up to a possible 47,800 acres. This expansion adds critical habitat to the Lake Umbagog watershed.

Forest Legacy Program

The Northern Forest has been the cradle of the Forest Legacy Program. Projects from this program have conserved and restored forests throughout New England.
