Championing disability advocacy in Albuquerque

Youth with disabilities in New Mexico got to try the FreeWheel, a wheelchair attachment that makes navigating uneven terrain easier.

In Albuquerque, New Mexico, the movement for disability justice outdoors is strong thanks to the incredible work of two local organizations: Adelante Development Center and Global Opportunities (GO) Unlimited. These two trailblazing organizations ensure that nature is a right, not a privilege, by making outdoor activities accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Adelante’s mission is to help people with disabilities achieve their goals. Adelante supports New Mexico seniors and people with disabilities by connecting them to technology, durable medical equipment, governmental benefits, residential services and other resources.

A standout initiative of Adelante’s work is the Destination Accessibility program. Supported by a $40,000 New Mexico Outdoor Equity Fund grant, this program offers affordable mobility equipment rentals, such as scooters and wheelchairs, including those designed specifically for outdoor activities. It ensures that the natural beauty of New Mexico is accessible and exciting for young adventurers with disabilities.

GO Unlimited shares this passion for inclusivity in the great outdoors. Dedicated to helping people with disabilities experience nature, GO Unlimited offers adaptive sports programs, guided outdoor adventures and community events. From cycling to fishing to adaptive equipment for travel, every activity is tailored to the needs of individuals with disabilities, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the beauty and excitement of nature.

GO Unlimited received a $7,700 Outdoor Equity Fund grant to provide inclusive educational fishing and watershed education for disabled, disadvantaged and low-income children, using adaptive drift boat technology to expand the availability of outdoor opportunities to people with disabilities.

New Mexico’s Outdoor Equity Fund

The New Mexico Outdoor Equity Fund plays a pivotal role in supporting organizations like Adelante and GO Unlimited. Established in 2019, the OEF has awarded nearly $5.7 million to nearly 250 organizations, ensuring equitable access to outdoor experiences for all youth in New Mexico. By supporting programs that foster stewardship and love for New Mexico’s land, water and cultural heritage, the outdoor equity fund helps organizations break down barriers and introduce thousands of young New Mexicans to the outdoors.
