A far right lawyer and writer who argues for selling off the nation’s federal lands has been reappointed to remain in charge of a nearly quarter-billion acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The move comes as BLM's headquarters is being broken up and amid a public outcry from him to step down. He has had to submit to over 50 recusals in his short tenure due to conflicts of interest.
“William Perry Pendley remains an ideological zealot whose views are deeply out of touch with the American mainstream,” said Phil Hanceford, conservation director for The Wilderness Society. “This is happening despite dozens of documented conflicts of interest, Senate opposition, and the tens of thousands of Americans who have raised concerns. His continued role at the BLM strongly suggests the administration is positioning itself to liquidate our shared public lands regardless of the politics or impacts to the public.”
